(Refreshments at 3:00 PM)

Goddard's Office of the Assistant Director for Information Sciences continues GSFC's Fall 2000 Information Sciences and Technology (IS&T) Colloquium Series with Professor Joseph JaJa, of the University of Maryland at College Park (UMCP), where, during the past couple of years, he has been involved in a research program dealing with the management, visualization, and mining of large scale distributed geospatial data. This program is carried through the University of Maryland Global Land Cover Facility (GLCF) that currently offers access to several terabytes of data products and a wide variety of new software tools that are based on our research. The GLCF is a part of the NASA-supported Earth Science Information Partnership (ESIP) and the NSF-supported National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure (NPACI). In this talk, Dr. JaJa will focus on recent work on the development of efficient indexing and clustering techniques for mining large scale geospatial data. In particular, he will describe scalable algorithms that achieve optimal I/O complexity.

A Fellow of the IEEE, Dr. JaJa is Director of the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS), Professor of Electrical Engineering, a faculty affiliate with UM's Institute for Systems Research, and an Affiliate Professor of Computer Science. Dr. JaJa's research interests include parallel algorithms, high performance computing, VLSI architectures, and signal processing. He is also involved in such projects as the Experimental Parallel Algorithmics (EXPAR) and ATM Testbed and Research Infrastructure at UM (ATRIUM).
