Vicky Markstein, will talk about Bioinformatics. During this talk, Vicky will present some very early problems tackled by bioinformatics and discuss some current research. There will be a discussion of bioinformatics in genomic sequencing, protein sequencing and protein structure analysis together with emerging fields. A few examples of the interplay between computer science and biology will be illustrated with some impressive successes and some stunning false starts.

Vicky Markstein did graduate work in Physics and Computer Sciences. She was assistant professor in Computer Sciences at CCNY and Courant Institute at NYU before joining the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center as a Research Staff Member. She lead a team of computer architects in the development of the IBM RS/6000 computer. She published several seminal papers in the area of compiler optimization. She designed and implemented IBM's quad precision mathematical routines for the RS/6000 that was both very fast and very accurate. In the last five years, she switched her attention to bioinformatics and co-authored papers in enhancer discovery.
